John Psathas' New Album 'Ukiyo' to be Released

Apr 12th, 2010

‘Ukiyo,’ a New Album featuring percussion music by John Psathas will be released by Rattle Records on 16 April. Pedro Carneiro is the featured soloist on this recording and is joined in performance by percussionist Jeremy Fitzsimons and chamber ensemble Stroma, conducted by Hamish McKeich. This album includes an electronic remix of Psathas’ music by Tim Prebble, who worked on Peter Jackson’s last five films.

The works on the CD include: One Study One Summary for solo marimba with digital audio, Ukiyo for vibraphone, marimba and digital audio, and Psyzygysm for percussion and chamber ensemble. Another track on the release is an electronic remix of One Study One Summary by Prebble. All of these works showcase Carneiro’s virtuosity and reveal areas of Psathas’ work that draw in electronica and jazz.

Carneiro will be in Wellington, New Zealand for the CD launch. This coincides with the World Premiere performance of djinn, a new marimba concerto by Psathas written for Pedro Carneiro and the Vector Wellington Orchestra conducted by Marc Taddei, which will take place in the Wellington Town Hall on 17 April. Carneiro will follow up this premiere with performances of djinn with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in May.
